How words are counted
Every Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as one. Everything else counts by words: letters and digits joined, with apostrophes and hyphens kept inside a word, so “don’t” and “well-known” are one word each.
Reading time
About 230 words a minute for English and Spanish, and 400 characters a minute for Chinese and Japanese, rounded to the nearest minute.
Writing, not just counting?
The AIWritingPal editor keeps this count live as you write, in focus mode or out of it, and Blue Pencil can shorten a passage when you are over your limit.
Questions
Is the text I paste stored anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser; the page never sends what you type to our servers.
Why is my Chinese word count different from Word’s?
Tools disagree: some count punctuation, some count a run of Chinese characters as one word. This counter counts each Chinese or Japanese character once and skips punctuation and spaces — the way Chinese and Japanese writing is usually measured.
